If you have owned horses for longer than five minutes you likely have stressed out about your horse’s gastrointestinal tract; colic, ulcers & diarrhea oh my! We adore these large animals with a GI tract that seemingly wants to self destruct in a variety of ways from time to time. Here at Smart Earth Camelina, our staff members stress about their horses GI tracts just like you so we set out to formulate a new product for daily intensive gastrointestinal support.
Formulated by a top veterinarian, Amanda Nascimento, DVM, along with some of the top formulators in the animal supplement industry we created Camelina+ for horses that just need a little more to stay at peak condition. Using Camelina and Alfalfa as our base with our proprietary selection of organic and natural ingredients mixed in we are thrilled to finally be able to bring this product to your barn.
We know if a horse has ulcers the only true treatment is a round of Omeprazole from your vet. There simply is no way around it. Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome, also known as EGUS, has been shown to affect over 90% of performance horses in multiple studies, but it’s not just performance horses that are impacted.
Again, multiple studies have shown that pleasure and recreational horses also suffer from ulcers with an estimated 36-53% of horses affected. Some horse owners do not have access to a veterinarian that's able to scope their horse to accurately diagnose ulcers, or choose to assume there is an ulcer rather than spend the money on the scope and opt to run a treatment of Omeprazole without a scope being performed. But here’s the thing, studies have also shown that 90% of horses treated with Omeprazole experience Rebound Acid Hypersecretion (RAHS) which can cause new ulcers to form if the underlying cause of the ulcers is not addressed.
Ulcers are just one of many gastrointestinal issues horses can experience. One growing diagnosis in horses is the diagnosis of Fecal Water Syndrome (FWS). Horses affected by FWS will produce normal manure but will also pass excess liquid either before, during or after they pass manure. This can lead to a hind end and back legs coated in this liquid which if not cleaned up or managed daily can lead to scouring, will attract more flies, and staining of their coats. The cause of FWS can be extremely difficult to diagnose but is generally thought to be caused by dietary issues, stress, poor dentition, and parasites.
FWS is a frustrating problem for horse owners- I for one, had a client with a sportpony who had FWS. He was a very cute little paint but at horseshows if his FWS showed up we had a lot of hind end cleaning that the grooms needed to handle between classes. Psyllium husks are often used for horses with FWS due to its ability to absorb excess water and promote normal bowel function.
Colic is the worst five letter word you can say to a horse owner. Studies have shown that 28% of all equine deaths can be attributed to colic and 11% of colic cases are fatal. In fact, colic is the second leading cause of death in horses over the age of 20, second only to old age itself. There are many options to help reduce the risk and prevent colic- a forage first based diet, access to plenty of water, adding electrolytes and salt to the diet, and considering a gastrointestinal supplement.
Smart Earth Camelina Plus was extensively field tested with real horse owners across North America just like you. We sought out horses with a wide range of gastrointestinal problems- ulcers, prone to colic, FWS (Fecal water Syndrome), and a variety of metabolic conditions and the results were undeniable. Smart Earth Camelina Plus will help you achieve the gastric wellness you have been looking for, for your equine partner.
